Macronutrient balance: it sounds like a really complicated thing but it’s actually really easy! This is one of the keys that actually almost all diets use to have success. It gets you a lot of bang for your buck whether you’re going for weight loss or energy and mood improvement. So the three macronutrients are carbohydrates, fat, and protein. (Water is also one but I’m not going to talk about that today.)
When you are trying to lose weight and you want to make some changes in your diet, what you need to learn how to do is read labels. They make it really easy to figure out what is in the food that you’re eating! A lot of times you want to cut back on junk food (read: sugar…we should all eat less sugar!). One of the ways to do know what’s in your food is to look at the label.
You may be buying eggs and you look at the label on the side and it tells you how many grams of fat there is and such – that’s awesome! We should be eating unprocessed foods like that. But as far as making healthy eating simple, which I am super passionate about, there are some foods you can buy packaged to make your life really easy that are decently good for you!
One of my favorite treats right now is this yogurt. On the label you can see there’s no fat (I don’t normally buy non-fat products because I eat a lot of healthy fats in my diet and I don’t believe in non-fat. But this is the exception because it tastes so good!) It has 14 g of carbohydrates, 6 of which are fiber which is pretty hard to find in yogurt. And there are 15 grams of protein.
This is a decent balance of carbs to proteins, which is one of the hardest things. Fat is important to balance too, but if you’re trying to lose weight, or cut back on sugar or anything like that, you want to eat less “junk” carbohydrates and sugar, more fiber, and more protein. Protein will keep you full longer and give you energy. Most people need more good protein.
So if you’re at the store and you’re looking at, for example, those “Naked” juice (it’s a protein smoothie that has tons of fruit and some protein powder added into it). One of my clients asked if that would be a good choice, and that’s a good question. It’s actually not the best choice!
Yes there was 30 grams of protein in there, but there was something like 58 grams of sugar – not a good ratio. It’s good to have a lot of protein but if the food also has a lot of carbohydrates, or sugar, then you’re not getting the benefit of the protein or fiber from it.
So read the label on everything when you’re at the store! Macronutrient balance can make a huge difference in the way you feel.
