Fitness is not about numbers

Today I went to a yoga class. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to one, but in my particular class, they turn off the lights. I was sitting on my mat, stretching, waiting for class to start, and when the teacher turned off the lights and turned on the music, I got tingles. My body knew what was coming and I thought “I love this!” I felt so happy and so amazing, before I even started yoga!

I want to know if you’ve ever had that experience around some physical activity! Another time I experienced this was when my husband was deployed and my kids were super young and I was really stressed out. I decided to join a gym – I had just had a baby and was pretty out of shape.

I went to a boxing class: gloves, hitting a bag, ya know? The first time I did that, I started crying! It was that same rush of “I love this”, tingles head to toe!

Have you ever had that experience?

Here’s the thing. With fitness, a lot of people feel like “I can’t go to yoga because it doesn’t burn enough calories”, or because it’s their “off day” exercise, so they don’t want to do it more than once a week.

You guys. If you’re like me and you love doing yoga and your body throws a party every time you do it, do it! All the time! Calories, when it comes to exercise, don’t matter. Fitness is not a number! It’s not a math problem. People think that calories in calories out thing is a math problem, but there’s so much more that goes into it.

Yes, you should be doing lots of different things. We all know, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is so good for you, strength training is super important for a well-rounded fitness program, etc. But if you’re just starting out and you’ve found something that you just love, do that! Every day! Let the calories leave your mind, and do not think about how many calories you’re burning or eating.

Think about how amazing you feel! That is what will make you stick to it, and keep coming back to it. If exercise is a punishment for you, you won’t do it! And I wouldn’t blame you.

So find something you love and do it! Even if it’s yoga! Even if it doesn’t burn enough calories! I don’t care. I love the way it makes me feel before, during, and after, I just love it. And my body loves it.

If you know what that is for you, then do that. If you don’t know what it is, start playing around with different types of exercises. Maybe it’s dance! Or Zumba! Or step aerobics! It doesn’t matter how many calories it burns.

Just think to yourself: if all types of exercise burned the same amount of calories, what would I do? And let the calories in calories out mentality completely leave your mind. And don’t think that way ever again. Because it’s so not conducive to happiness in your exercise program. What will make you stick with it is when you fall in love with it.
