Meditation – whoa. If you’re like me, that word can bring up a lot of pictures in your mind. Maybe Buddhist monks or something, sitting in a dark room, smoky, cross-legged on the floor…maybe super hippy weirdness…? Maybe.
I used to not really know what meditation was. But now that I have started learning, it’s amazing! I totally believe that meditation is for everyone. I don’t think there is a single person on planet earth who wouldn’t benefit from meditation! That includes kids, even young kids.
If you are like I was and you are overwhelmed by the thought of meditating: What does that even mean, where do I begin, how do I even do this? Don’t worry! Today I’m going to teach you the first barely baby step so you can start to have the benefits of meditation in your life.
So meditation is very well researched, there’s a lot of scientific backing behind the benefits of it. It’s a really good thing to do! But many people aren’t sure what to do.
For my purposes, in my life and world, meditation is not a transcendent, spiritual experience. For me, meditation is just a technique to get out of my head and bring my awareness into my body. That’s what I’m going to teach you, the first baby step to doing that. And I want you to try this right now! You can do this anywhere that you can focus (so probably not while driving, as you need to focus on the act of driving). Anywhere that you can sit still and calm yourself down.
The first thing to do is to harness the power of your mind and bring that down into your body. So I’ll pick a body part…let’s say your knee. Bring your mind down into your knee. Think about your knee, feel your knee with your mind. What does it feel like? Is it hot? Is it cold? Is there sunlight on it? Do you feel your pants against the skin of your knee? Explore your knee!
It sounds weird but if you do it, you’ll know what I mean. You can do this with any part of your body! Try it with the palm of your hand. I can feel the skin of my palm, I can feel air blowing on my palm because I brought my mind into my palm.
That’s super easy! It takes like 3 seconds to do. You can stay there and explore for as long as you want! I mentioned recently about the body scan I do at night, and this is just a mini version of that.
Maybe you have a place where you feel tension or commonly carry stress, maybe on your shoulders or neck. You can sit still and bring your mind there.
The second step is to breathe into that place. I don’t mean physically blow on your knee (or whatever the body part may be), I mean breathing deeply and bringing that breath to your knee. Try it! Just take a deep breath and bring the power of your breath into your knee. Relax those muscles through your breath.
This is your mind and your breath working together. We’re not doing any big healing methods here, we’re just practicing bringing our minds into our bodies.
