What Makes You Move?


My favorite way to move every day is to take a walk while listening to an audiobook. Sometimes I don't feel like working out, but I almost always feel like reading.  So I put on a sports bra (because that always seems to make it official), some shoes, and my headphones and get outside.

Everything is changing outside right now. Leaves are changing colors and falling, the air is cooling (if only in the morning here in Texas) and it is beautiful. I love seeing the signs of life in my neighborhood and smelling the garlic from this one particular house--I can smell it even from behind their backyard.  I love seeing people walking their dogs and hearing the sound of the lawn mowers humming.

And inevitably, my body gets into it, my legs start going faster, my heart gets pumping, and I'm so glad I got out there.

If you hate exercise, or you think you don't have time for it, here's my advice. Find something that gets you to put on your sports bra (please say that's not just me??). If you're motivated by social situations, go to an exercise class at the gym. If it's alone time you love, try swimming or walking. If you need accountability, find a running or biking partner. If you're competitive, find a team sport. If you don't want to make it a big deal, do a YouTube video in your bedroom just before you hop in the shower.

It's not about looking good--it's about feeling good. And our bodies were designed so that it's pretty impossible to feel great without consistent, daily movement. So give yourself the gift of a few minutes a day to move in a way that makes you happy. Sports bra or not.
